I don’t like the new Batman movie. In fact, I rather actively disliked it. I would describe it as two hours of unpleasant things happening to people I didn’t care about at all. Which is why I don’t understand why everyone who wasn’t me apparently loved it. My boyfriend and I got into what was probably the biggest fight we’ve ever had about the merits of the Batman movie. The characters in this movie are terrible. They’re like, anti-characters. The entire movie is one big argument for the old “show-don’t-tell” doctrine. There’s no motivation for any of the things that they do. And yeah, I realize it’s a comic book movie, but still. Even as an “idea movie” this movie fails - we get thrown about fifty different ideas about what Batman stands for and what all of this really means, but none of them are really explored enough to be evocative or meaningful. It could have been really powerful when Batman decides to take the blame for Harvey Dent’s crimes so Gotham can have a real human hero - if I gave a shit about Bruce Wayne as a person, or if I believed that Harvey Dent was inspirational. Instead, I was like “Oh, thank god, this unpleasantness is over and I can leave the theater.” The new Batman movie is pretty much the equivalent of one of the Matrix movies: Lots of special effects, plenty of philosophy 101, no characterization and semi-crap writing.

Also, don’t even get me started about how much Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character pisses me off, or how this movie is totally sexist.

We moved the cat over to the new place. Which I kind of want to call Jon’s place, except it’s our place now, and also my old house is still kind of my place until September. It’s confusing to reference and so I’ve been calling them the Hillcrest house and the La Jolla house. The other day my friend Mike was like “Are you going to be at Jon’s or Brian’s tonight? I’ve decided you don’t have a house.”

Anyway, we moved Sophie over to the Hillcrest house. She is mainly hiding under the bed, although she’ll come out and snuggle/explore sometimes when we’re around. She didn’t do this during an previous moves, but then again, my “bed” is a mattress on the floor, so it doesn’t really have an under in which to hide. Yesterday I came home and she ignored me and hid under the bed, and then when Jon came home she was immediately like “Alright. Time to come out and party.” Furry little jerk.

So the exciting non-CSA news around here is that I’m moving in with my boyfriend. This is great because my boyfriend is snuggly and I kind of dig him. Also, hopefully less driving around and cheaper rent. Plus he lives in a part of town that is much, much more awesome than my part of town. For example - it has restaurants you can walk to from his house! That are not crappy chain restaurants. And more importantly, bars. And instead of being inhabited by undergrads and cranky old people, it’s full of hipsters and gay people. Yay!

Downside: I have to move all of my crap. I have a lot of crap. Moving and I, we do not get along. Last time I had to move it featured me sobbing on the sidewalk as the giant metal box I was supposed to pack all of my stuff in was taken away empty because the fork lift dude claimed there wasn’t enough empty street parking to deliver it. So far this move has been less disastrous than that move, which is nice. Also, not really saying much. I’m moving the cat over there on Saturday, so we’ll see how it goes.

So the excitement around here (and I use the term “excitement” loosely) is that the boyfriend and I joined a CSA. For those of you who aren’t produce dorks, CSA or Community Supported Agriculture is when you sign up with a local farm at a fixed price and get a weekly (or bi-weekly) box of produce. It’s like a surprise present every week that’s filled with produce! Plus it’s all organic and local and doesn’t support big agri-business, which are all good things in my book. We joined Be Wise Ranch, which has a pick-up place right next to school, making things convenient. Right now we’re getting the weekly “small box” and wondering if we should go to bi-weekly or stay weekly.

Here’s some pictures of our first two boxes - you can click through to Flickr to see everything labeled.

Our first pickup:

Bok choy, blueberries, cabbage, cantaloupe, cucumbers, grapes, green beans, kale, lettuce, parsley, and zucchini.

Parsley, kale, 2 eggplants, 5 cucumbers, a bag of mixed salad greens, 8 carrots, 2 baby bok choy, 2 heads of lettuce, 3 zucchini, 5 apricots, 2 leeks, and 4 beets.

If anyone has ideas about what to do with lettuce (other than salads) let me know!

(This photo and the other photo taken by my boyfriend.)

I saw this spice rack on the internet, and was immediately like “OMG WANT,” especially since at the time I had 50 spices all shoved into a cabinet, and was constantly having to take half of them out in order to find anything. Plus there had been incidents like the time I was digging around in there and a bottle of cumin flew out and committed suicide all over my kitchen floor. So I set up using my mind powers to get my boyfriend to help me build a magnetic spice rack.

(We’re missing some spices in the picture because I took some down to use them.)

We bought a magnetic white board for about fifty bucks at Staples, and mounted it in the kitchen next to the refrigerator. We ordered the tins from here and put magnetic tape on the back of them. (I think I got the magnetic tape idea from Mac at Pesky Apostrophe.) For the labels we used a combination of labels leftover from another spice rack and cut up labels from the spice jars. Then I compulsively alphabetized the spices.

So far the spice rack has been great to use. It’s easy to find anything, and I can just grab what I need off the whiteboard while I’m cooking. Plus it’s really nice looking and decorative in our kitchen. And this I can tell at a glance what spices I have and how much of them I have left. And we have about ten tins left for spice additions.
